In Jane McGarry's Unexpected Rewards, we are placed in an area that many would consider to be outside of our comfort zone. We all try to plan how our lives are going to be lived, but life has a way of changing things. Especially in Olivia's case. After saving the life of King William, she is given some 'Unexpected Rewards' that come as a complete shock for her. As she battles with the right decision to make concerning her future, in comes Jocelyn to add some competition to the equation. It is said that 'beauty is only skin deep,' but can King William see past that for his son Liam? Adding to the stress of palace life is the prophecy about the death of King William in the coming spring. With the guards doubled and on constant patrol, will they be able to keep the King safe?

Jane does an excellent job bringing her characters to life in this story. As I was reading this after a long day of work, I was often looking around for Sadie to bring in a mug of warm mead for the evening. Every range of emotion will pull at your heartstrings as the story unfolds; the bullying of Olivia, the deceitfulness of the ladies in waiting; the playful nature of Liam; and the love that blossoms between old friends. So many times in stories do I find myself cringing at some of the language and events, but this is not so with Jane McGarry's Unexpected Rewards. I was fully drawn into the story, hoping and yearning that Olivia would wind up with Liam in the end. Her way of storytelling also proves that a great story can be told with passion and not cross the line of being inappropriate. If you are looking for a story to get lost in, I highly recommend Jane McGarry's book.
