Someone is systematically killing off middle-aged FBI agents, and a psychic may be their only hope in discovering his identity, in the exciting suspense thriller, Unorthodox (A Kendra Sparks Novel Book 1) by S. Peters-Davis. Kendra inherited from her grandmother the unique ability to see and communicate with spirits who have just died. After a three-year silence, Kendra receives an urgent message pertaining to life and death from her best friend, Jenna. Kendra drops everything and catches a plane to Washington to see what Jenna needs. Jenna has known Kendra most of her life and is aware of her unusual capabilities, but in the past, she usually scoffed at them. Therefore, Kendra is confused as to why Jenna, a criminal profile analyst for the FBI, needs her help in catching a murderer. Before Kendra meets the other agent Jenna is working with or even has the opportunity to decide if she is willing to help, Jenna dies. Even though shocked by the suddenness of her own passing, Jenna continues to insist Kendra stay and aid in the investigation. Jenna believes with the help of Kendra's gift, the two of them can assist the FBI task force in stopping a serial killer.
The existence of life after death is the crucial element featured in this electrifying suspense thriller. This riveting novel captures the reader with its stimulating story line, action-filled scenes, and engaging characters. The protagonist, Kendra, with her medium abilities, is quite similar to Melinda Gordon's role in Ghost Whisperer. Kendra's character is just as charming and endearing as Melinda's, and her romantic interest is reminiscent of Melinda's husband, Jim. Although the main characters resemble those in Ghost Whisperer, the development of the plot and story line are entirely different and, if possible, even more thrilling. The story is charged with suspense, a touch of violence, a hint of romance, and the wispy flavor of the paranormal floating throughout. It is a gripping story, but because of some of the violence and sex, it is best suited for a more mature audience. This is the first book and is a superb start for what promises to be an exceptional series. I am eagerly anticipating more adventures with Kendra, Jenna, and Derek.
