“Waffles and Pancakes: A Lesson in Bullying” by Cindy Springsteen has a very important lesson for both children and adults. Waffles and Pancakes are hamsters belonging to best friends Danny and Griffin. The boys notice that their hamsters are not eating as much as they used to and they take them to the doctor. After thinking about it the boys realize the hamsters had seemed depressed since their last vet visit. The boys had sat next to another boy with a guinea pig. What the boys did not know was the Oscar the Guinea pig was a bully. They were trying to get to the bottom of Waffles and Pancakes' problem by visiting with Tom, Oscar's owner. Oscar started to be rude to Waffles and Pancakes again but the cute little hamsters told him how badly it hurts when someone teases or makes fun of them. Oscar and Tom both learned a lesson.

“Waffles and Pancakes” is an adorable book. This simple short story has two important lessons for children and adults. One of the most important lessons is about bullying. It is too bad that we have to teach children about bullying. The second lesson is related to the first; there is usually a reason why a person becomes a bully. I love the way this book can be used to open a dialogue between parents or grandparents and their children. I shared this book with two of my grandchildren and it led to a very helpful conversation. This book should be in every school library.
