We Who Burn by Merethe Walther is the story of Petra Freyrsdotter, a skilled necromancer. Petra is struggling though. Two years ago, she lost Orrus, her lover, and even with all her skills, she just can’t bring him back to life – he is nothing more than a shade by her side. Petra searches high and low for the answer but she gets caught by a priest from an order called the God of Truth and Light, known for killing necromancers. Petra is shocked when she is given a choice – find a stolen blade and survive or die. The priest promises to help her resurrect Orrus if she succeeds and, desperate, Petra agrees. But she didn’t expect to fall for the thief when she finally finds him. When Petra and Caspar are captured by the Order, they discover what the blade is being used for and the two must work together to keep the blade away from the Order and destroy them. Petra must risk everything now to save the future and that could mean she never gets to bring Orrus back from the dead.

We Who Burn by Merethe Walther is a violent tale of magic, greed, and dark fantasy. When you pick this book up, make sure you have the time because you won't want to put it down. It creates a pull in you – once you start reading, you will want to get to the end without any disruptions. A complete world of fantasy, it is so well written, it will feel real and you will find yourself so invested in it, your emotions will follow those of the characters. It is a fast-paced story with plenty of action – it is bloodthirsty in places, and violent, so be prepared – and you watch the characters grow throughout the story as they come to life before you. A unique, thrilling tale. I highly recommend this for anyone who loves fantasy stories or just wants to try a new genre.
