Have you ever heard of a Kakapo or an Aye Aye? Or how about a Bumblebee Bat or a Saola? I haven’t either. But these are some pretty weird animals. The sad part is that these animals are endangered, like the Bumblebee Bat which is really tiny and threatened by burning forests near their cave homes. And the dragon-like, scaly Pangolin, which is hunted for meat as well as scales, used in traditional Chinese medicine. Lots of fun and interesting facts surround these weird and wacky endangered animals. It makes me sad that these, and so many others, are threatened mostly by humans.

K.B. Carr’s nonfiction children’s book, Weird & Wacky Endangered Creatures: Strange, Weird Animals That Share Our World, is the second book in the Weird & Wacky Planet series. The author presents eight unusual (and yes, weird) animals from around the world that are endangered and facing extinction. Each animal is presented with colorful photographs, scientific names and classifications, interesting facts, the author’s discussion of what makes these animals weird and wacky, and a discussion about why they are considered endangered. Then, for the young aspiring biologist, there is a field activity to make these young readers more attuned to the world around them. At the end of the book comes the conclusion with some additional sites where young readers can find more information about endangered animals. This is a fun, informative, interactive book that will inspire and educate young readers about some of the weirdest animals on this planet, those not usually found in the public zoo.
