Author Biography

Life is challenging, fantastic, miracle filled, and troubled -- sometimes all at once. There are memories of the blessings of family and friends, mixed with my own success and failure. Life is good. God, family and friends give me daily reason to thank God for His blessings.

I grew up in New Mexico and Arizona, where I discovered a love of reading at age 12. That summer I read all of the books in the juvenile section of our small-town library. A year later, when we moved to another small New Mexico community I spent the summer reading their library's juvenile books.

Although I moved to Texas after high school and graduated from The University of North Texas, I still carry a deep love and respect for the US Southwest. I am, at heart, what some call a "desert rat."

I majored in English and Education at college, where I read almost 300 children’s books in one semester. When my daughters were young, I took a children's literature course and began writing for children. Thus began a lifelong need to write.

Today, I live in North Texas. I am blessed with two daughters and four grandchildren (two grown and two living close enough for me to enjoy good times.) I thank God for my enjoyment of reading, the love of writing, and whatever ability I possess.

Wesley Out West by Rhonda Walker is a delightful adventure story for children where they get to read about Wesley the Walrus's journey to the Big West to save that town. Octopus wants Wesley's help as Old Walter the Whale has taken over and they need a brave Sheriff. Wesley arrives in Big West amid cheers and songs. Everyone there welcomes him and it is at that time Old Walter arrives. Wesley shakes when he sees Walter because he is so big. Will he be able to stand his ground against the Whale and save the town?

The story is exciting with a lot of bright and colorful illustrations. They make the characters come alive and they give good pace and movement to the story and scenes. It's a good bedtime storybook for children, and parents and grandparents can use it for their kids and grandkids. It's also good for read aloud sessions in classrooms and school libraries. Wesley the Walrus is adorable and it's nice to read about him trying to make his boring life more interesting.

The facts about marine animals given at the end of the book are informative and educational and give children more knowledge about these sea creatures. The author does a good job of introducing children to marine animals in a fun way, making it easy for them to understand. It's a good book for teachers and parents to teach children about marine life.

“A short, cute, and fun story for children. The illustrations are awesome, especially in the e-book version that I received. Beautifully done color illustrations and an engaging text . . . I read it to my two little girls, and both were captivated by the story and the illustrations. Both girls gave it five stars. Believable or not, it is a very cute story and fun to read. As an adult, it was fun reading it with different voices for the characters. I recommend this book for children.”

“. . .easy to read story is worth sharing. The basic lesson is delivered in a gentle way. My son (9 and loves to read) said it was good that Willie was so brave. . .he gave it four out of five stars. The images are very colorful and pleasing to the eye. I would recommend this for younger readers, school libraries and new parents. This is the sort of book I would love to read to my kids while curled up in a huge chair.”

4.0 out of 5 stars - Six-year-old liked this book!

This is a great children's book that small children will find enjoyable. After reading the book, you will be able to have a good conversation with your children about responsibility, bullies, and listening to your parents. I recommend this book for either reading out loud to your children or for children who are already reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars My Seven-Year-Old Loved It!
Cheryl H
This is a delightful book. I shared this story with my seven-year old son, who enjoyed it immensely. It appealed to his own wild imagination and sense of adventure. Willie is a bored, bored, bored (did I mention bored?) walrus who is tired of the same old thing. My son and I give this a 5-star rating out of 5. We look forward to more adventures with Wesley in the future.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fun book

“After we read this book together my son said, Mama, you should have brought this book to school today . . . [This is a] book about bullying and how we shouldn't change ourselves to do what someone else wants us to do. The book also taught about being brave . . .with confidence. We are then stronger and do not have to resort to violence. . .The adventure was strong, keeping the interest. You wanted to see what was coming next. My son asked if there was another book like this. I will be checking for more from this author. I will be sure to recommend this book to other friends.

[This book] is a short, cute, and fun story for children. The illustrations are awesome, especially in the e-book version. I thought this was a great book. I'm so glad to have it on our iPad now for when our 6-month old is just a little bigger and I can read it to him all of the time. I loved the courageous nature of the walrus in the story. The story was full of imagination and well-written. Two thumbs up for Willie

I read this to my daughter, who is two, and my boys who are 4 and 8. My 8 year old just could not get into this one but my four year has had me read this again and again since we received it for review. He absolutely loved the idea of sea creatures in the Old West. (Don’t they need to live in the water? ha-ha) There was the Octopus, Polar Bears, Seals, and a One-eyed Whale. This story helps you to find excitement in the little, every day, experiences we have. I do believe it encouraged my son, to be a bit more creative, to think in a different way, use his imagination and always do what is right. No matter the cost. We will surely be reading this one again
