Author Biography

David is a Graphic Designer and Creative Writer who lives in Victoria, BC with his wife and children. He grew up in England, where his love of exploring the outdoors led to all sorts of adventures, partly thanks to the ‘forest’ that was his backyard.

As a child, David was diagnosed with dyslexia and always found reading and writing to be a struggle. It was this challenge that led him to create fun and expressive ways to capture his own observations and stories.

The What Does Series started as a storytelling game created for David’s son when heading to and from daycare as a creative way for him to teach his son all about nature while answering a never-ending stream of toddler questions in a fun way.

One story soon led to another, and before he knew it, the What Does Series was born!

David hopes that the imaginative What Does Series of books about insects and animals helps children discover both a love and understanding of the beautiful world that surrounds us all while also allowing them to feel confident in their reading through humour and interactive storytelling.

Written by David McArthur and illustrated by the author and Clara Spinassi, What Does A Bee Do? (The What Does Series, Volume 3) is a book ideally for pre-schoolers which looks at various insects and animals and, by a process of elimination, establishes exactly what a bee does. The simple story considers other everyday foods and looks at the type of animal or insect that might produce them, such as a cow and milk, and a hen and eggs. The story then looks at the role of other animals such as a dog guarding a home, or a cat catching mice. While looking for exactly what a bee does, the story tells the young reader what other animals do in a simple and straight-forward way.

The illustrations in this book are large, colourful and eye-catching for the young reader and will encourage discussion with a parent or guardian about the animal or insect shown and what they might do. As well as ultimately explaining what a bee does, the story will help a child to understand the role of other creatures, from putting milk on cereal to seeing a beautiful butterfly. This book is ideal for a parent to read with an early learner and it will have a variety of uses. The easy to understand language will also help to identify words and, as well as being an ideal book for the home, this would be useful in an early years environment such as playschool. The author, David McArthur, has written a gentle and interactive story that is sure to delight its young readers.

I never knew that there were more than 20,000 different types of bees in our world or that bees talked to each other through dancing. This is a wonderful addition to the What Does Series. An educational book for a curious child.

Have you ever wondered what a bee does all day long? There are many insects in this world, and they each fill a unique spot. The bee is not drawn to light at night, nor does it major in jumping. Bees don’t leave a slime trail, nor do they turn into butterflies. Yet, bees do one of the most important jobs in the insect world. They manufacture honey. Where would the world be without honey? David McArthur shares his knowledge of bees in What Does a Bee Do? In this delightfully illustrated book, David discusses all types of insects. Children will love guessing which bug does what. They will enjoy seeing the illustrations of the different insects and learning what each one does that is unique to them. This is a must-read for children from preschool to second grade. Read this book to your child and be amazed at what questions they come up with. Then, be ready to research and answer each question.

Children tend to be amazed at all the different insects they encounter. But unfortunately, many children are afraid of bees because they might sting. So build on your child’s curiosity by reading them What Does a Bee Do? This book is an excellent start to your child’s journey into the fascinating world of zoology. When children know what insects do and why they are essential, they will learn to respect them and protect their fragile environment. I do not know of a better introduction to insects than this book by David McArthur. He has done a masterful job of introducing the intriguing world of insects to a new generation. Teach your child to respect insects’ boundaries, and they will be fine. Help them understand the importance of providing a proper environment for insects. Plant sunflowers with your child and enjoy watching the bees gather. The bees will pollinate the plants, and the plants will provide sunflower seeds for your child to enjoy eating. Help them understand the cycle of life.

What Does A Bee Do? The What Does Series, Volume 3 is written by David McArthur. First of all, I loved this book’s cover. The blending of pinks, purples, oranges and the kind of rainbow pattern in the background feels good and inviting. This story is a colorful and entertaining quest to find out exactly what a bee does. It is much more than that because, on this quest, children learn about what a bee doesn’t do and which other insects do those things instead. Readers will learn some new fun facts. I’m not going to give anything away, but I will say that I was glad to read about a wonderful insect that sparkles in the sun and about the exciting feats performed by certain insects near the water.

What Does A Bee Do? is illustrated by Lucy Rogers with the author, and the images bring all the insects and their surroundings to life. My favorite drawing and one that I could easily frame is on page ten. I especially like the pictures of the bee and the many expressions she has when displaying her varied emotions in response to the very idea that she might do some of the things that are suggested. Alas, she does become a little disheartened when confronted with so many tasks performed by other insects, yet still not finding what her unique task in life is. Along with readers, she will soon discover some of the many wonderful things that she can achieve. Thank you, David McArthur, for this enlightening and happy-spirited insight into the world of bees and how they bless our world.
