"What is Death?", written by Etan Boritzer and illustrated by Nancy Forrest, discusses death using kid-friendly terms and explanations. The author discusses what death means and what death actually is, including what physically happens to a person's body. A person's soul is discussed carefully since this is a complex concept for children (and adults as well!). Different religions and cultures view death differently and the various beliefs and practices are discussed making this a book appropriate for use with children of various cultures as it does not just focus on one culture.

This book is filled with a lot of information and also bright, yet soothing, illustrations. Some of the information included in this book may be too much to share with children, as it may possibly overwhelm them or lead to more questions. However, how the book is laid out makes it easy to pick and choose sections to share at any given time. Therefore, this is an excellent resource to use with children to answer specific questions about death and is a quick "go-to" resource to help answer questions and provide explanations. I love that it approaches death from various standpoints and beliefs as it is important to be culturally aware and sensitive when working with children and families. Also, children will be aware that what death means to them may mean something different to one of their peers and it is important that this is addressed.
