What Vengeance Comes: A John Decker Novel is a horror novel written by Anthony M. Strong. There were times when John Decker wished he hadn't decided to finally come back home to Wolf Haven, Louisiana. His mother had been brutally slain out in the woods when he was 10 years old, and when he was old enough to attend college, he left with no intentions of returning. But he did return, and he became the town Sheriff. He wasn't thrilled about accompanying Mayor Beau Thornton out to Anne Doucet's place nestled deep in the woods. When John was a kid, there were rumors that the old lady was a witch, and he figured kids today were still saying the same things. Annie was waiting for them as they walked up to her cabin, and she knew what they wanted from her. The town had made plans to build an access road to the Interstate, and it ran right through her land. That land had been in Annie's family for six generations, however, and no amount of money or threats would get her to leave it.

Anthony M. Strong's horror novel, What Vengeance Comes: A John Decker Novel, has a rich and evocative setting deep in Cajun country where folks still talk of the loup garou in whispered voices. While werewolves and other shifters have been the subject of many modern romance novels, Strong's story harkens back to early werewolf lore. His werewolf is the loup garou, a legendary French monster, who does not change involuntarily at the full moon, and who can alter form at will. Decker must deal with the pain of his mother's loss all over again as it seems that the same monster that took her life all those years ago is terrorizing and slaying the inhabitants of Wolf Haven. Strong's town is vividly recreated for the reader, and his monster is the stuff of nightmares; fast, deadly and unstoppable. What Vengeance Comes is well-plotted and suspenseful, and Sheriff John Decker is a character I'd definitely like to see more of. This werewolf novel with a difference is highly recommended.
