Where the Memories Lie by Sibel Hodge is an undeniably thrilling story of family deception, secrets, and downright criminal acts. The lives of Olivia and her family will never be the same again, after a confession from the lips of her father-in-law, Tom. He suffers with Alzheimer’s and so congenial, lucid conversation is usually non-existent, but one day he admits to having committed a murder. The murder of Olivia’s best friend. Olivia is in denial that her quiet, kind father-in-law is capable of such an act of brutality. When Tom continues to claim he is responsible for covering up the murder, Olivia feels it must be investigated. She decides to take the necessary steps to uncover the truth, and in so doing uncovers one nightmare after another. The family becomes unravelled as each revelation is made known to them and, naturally, suspicion creeps from one member to yet another, each doubting the other, before all is revealed. How the entire family deals with this devastating news makes absolutely captivating – if horrifying – reading.

This is a very good book. The family characters could be members of your own family: their lives are so ordinary. Like any family they have ups and downs, but this latest news threatens to capsize them. I read the entire book within a short time frame because the content is so engaging. I can recommend this book to all readers who enjoy the role of sleuth. I thought I had cracked the case, only to be totally surprised when the real crime and criminal were revealed. An excellent read!
