Do you know who lives in the woods? Are there squirrels? Or raccoons? Opossums or bears? There are all kinds of animals, amphibians, and insects that make the woods their home. Would you be able to recognize them if you saw them in the woods? I bet you’d recognize the snake or the squirrel; perhaps even the woodpecker and the bear? But how about the opossum – would you recognize its face?

J.P. Taylor’s picture book, Who Lives in the Woods?, is a great learning tool for young readers. The author introduces all kinds of woodland animals, amphibians, and insects. The picture of the animal’s face is shown first along with two questions: “Who lives in the woods? Do you know who this is?” The following page identifies the creature with a complete picture of the animal and two simple statements like these: “It’s a woodpecker.” And “Woodpeckers live in the woods.” Not only is the author teaching young readers about creatures that live in the woods, but language skills are being taught here as well. The repetitive nature of the presentation of each animal, amphibian, or insect will help young readers start to recognize some of the repeated words. The question/ answer approach will also encourage young readers to be interactive and try answering the question before the next page supplies the answer. At the end of the book, the author provides a quick summary to test the young reader’s ability to remember what was learned. The entire approach of the book is playful, fun, interactive, and educational.
