Anna is a very inquisitive girl. She wants to know all kinds of things. But right now it’s Autumn and the leaves are changing color. Everything looks and feels different in Autumn and Anna wants to know why. She wants to know who paints the trees in Autumn, who gives the orange to the sun, and what makes the rivers run. Her classmates tease and bully her, but Anna doesn’t care. She just wants to know. She asks her mother and receives an artist’s perspective; she asks her grandfather, her grandmother, and her father, and receives different perspectives from each of them. Anna remains perplexed. Finally, one night while she is watching the moon, a voice speaks to her from above. She doesn’t really know whether or not she should trust this voice, but the voice gives her an answer that she can accept more than the answers given by her parents and her grandparents.

Silvia Marsz’s newest picture book story, Who Paints the Trees in Autumn, is a wonderful journey of discovery as a little girl seeks answers to explain the changing colors of Autumn. The abstract illustrations are very bright and colorful and add an artistic flavor to the book, as does the story being told in rhyming verse. The most important question that she has answered is that it’s really okay to wonder about things, and that she should continue to ask questions because that’s how she’ll learn new things. This is a delightful story to be treasured and a great way for a young reader to learn about the changing colors of Autumn.
