There is nothing I love more than historical fiction. Throw in some romance and I am that much happier. And then, if the book is authored by someone I haven't read before, but turns out to be fairly prolific in the genre, well, that's just the trifecta for me as a reader. I've found all three in Wicked Wager by author Mary Gillgannon. Follow the story of Marcus Revington, notorious gamester, as he wins Horngate Manor in a card game. The only hitch is he has to marry the estate's heiress, Penny Montgomery, in order to claim it. Marcus isn't concerned with this minor inconvenience, but Penny certainly is. She's not prepare to give up her relative freedom, or her home, for that matter, and she concocts a scheme to convince Marcus that he doesn't want to marry her.

Wicked Wager is a fun, delightful and ultimately romantic read. Author Mary Gillgannon writes with a clarity for the time period that isn't always found in historical fiction, and is gifted at creating characters that are completely engaging. In fact, this book in its entirety was so engaging that I simply could not put it down. I had planned to read a few chapters and go to sleep, but instead, at 2 a.m. I found myself finishing the last page. Wicked Wager is a book that would be enjoyed by any reader who loves historical fiction, romance, or just a great, fun read. I am so pleased to highly recommend this book, it was an absolutely wonderful read. This is the first book that I've read by Mary Gillgannon, but I can guarantee, it will not be the last!
