Wil Jade is a successful press agent in Sacramento in the early 1940s. Wil Jade by Philip Alyster Lagree begins with Wil’s hunt for justice for the death of his father at the hands of unscrupulous politicians and continues through the end of WWII. Wil is able to use his connections in the government, police force, and local media to uncover the plot by several men entrusted with the good of the State of California and its people to illegally take over territory that would prove to be extremely valuable. In the meantime, the war breaks out and Wil is involved in outrunning both German and Japanese submarines as he completes a task to help his father’s best friend and further the war effort. Based on his success at sea and also in bringing the criminals to justice, Wil becomes an author. The question is whether he can move on with his life with the help of his partner and Laura, his new love.

Philip Alyster Lagree has written a novel with a tremendous scope that is full of historical references and the flavor of California in the days leading up to WWII. His images are vivid as are the details of life not only at sea and in the wide open country that was once central California but also in the White House. It is easy to feel Wil Jade’s sorrow, determination, and peace as the action progresses. His interactions with and the support of the other characters is real and appropriate. Wil Jade is an in-depth depiction of a son’s quest for justice and a historical record of the emotional toll world events took on the men and women advising the country’s leaders and reporting the news.
