Wild Roots: Coming Alive in the French Amazon by Donna Mulvenna is the journey of the author through the French Amazon where her experiences, travels, insights, and horrors will introduce readers to an entirely new world. They will venture into the depths and mysteries of one of the earth’s unknown places; bizarre, chaotic, frustrating, humid, disease ridden, exciting, magnificent, and confusing. The book captures the essence, people, culture, customs, and history of this land, and every page has some interesting experience that will make readers want to take a trip to French Guiana. The wildlife, the beauty of the Amazon forest, and the healing power of nature make this book an insightful and entertaining read as readers get to see the author letting go of her inhibitions and adjusting in a primitive place like French Guiana.

The author’s experiences are adventurous and the fauna and flora of the place are vividly described, making readers connect well with the author’s journey there. The book is also educational and informative and gives a lot of detail about this unknown place which is still not fully explored. The author’s description of the place is magical, her life there is an enriching experience, and her evocative writing style makes it an entertaining read. I enjoyed the book and the author’s experiences as these transported me to an entirely new land. It gives one a sense of satisfaction to read about someone’s good travel experiences, which can be motivational to readers who want to venture to new lands.
