“What I can tell you is that things that haven’t been spoken of for lifetimes are now being whispered around tavern tables, and people are looking for answers – finding ways to make sense of our ever-changing world.” A young man named Wolf saves a noblewoman's life while out hunting in the woods. He mysteriously gets injured in the process as his peaceful life takes a different turn. A lord's arrival in his village leads to a terrible incident that forces Wolf and his friend Crow to flee their home with guardsmen hot on their heels. A strange female warrior becomes their savior and provides some answers to Wolf's peculiar predicament. The world is indeed changing, where a dark force from the ancient texts is making a return to the land. Wolf's Run is the first book of The Unifier Series by Maximilian Becker.
It took me a while to familiarize myself with the intricate but fascinating world-building of Wolf's Run. With an engaging premise and clear prose, the story also has interesting and different timelines, particularly in the beginning chapters which link certain past events to the present. The plot is steadily paced and there's quite a significant number of characters as well as substantially intense fight scenes. Wolf's story development is definitely intriguing but I gravitated more towards Locrian, an Eight elite warrior from Pythagor, and her 'ceraton' Ja’Rayne. All in all, this is an impressive start for The Unifier Series by Maximilian Becker that caters to YA and adult readers who love a fantasy story with an original concept. I look forward to reading the second installment.
