You Were the First, written by Patricia MacLachlan and illustrated by Stephanie Graegin, is a beautiful story celebrating a child's 'firsts' in his or her life. This story takes the reader through many milestones that a baby and, later on, toddler and young child accomplish and experience. These milestones range from cooing, crawling, seeing leaves fall in autumn, making a snow angel in the winter, and throwing a ball. The very first page depicts the parents saying that the child was the very first to sleep in the baby basket and the book ends with saying that maybe someday other children may follow to sleep in the basket, but that the child will always be the first one to have slept in it.

Patricia MacLachlan has done a wonderful job with writing this children's book, as this is an excellent way of celebrating a baby's milestones and firsts. You Were the First is a book that will be a treasured story for parents and their children to read together and will bring back memories of when the child was little. Also, this is an excellent book to be shared with a child who is soon to become a big brother or a big sister as it will remind him or her of how special he or she is when the attention is being lavished on the new baby. Stephanie Graegin's illustrations are beautifully done and are full of detail, and complement the story perfectly. This book would be the perfect gift for a child who is going to become a big brother or sister.
