Mystery, murder and mayhem surround Charlotte Holmes and her newly acquired friend, Dr. Josh Watan, in A Christmas in Calcutta by AM Sardar. In a delightful new take on the traditional Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson mysteries, Charlotte and Josh meet under unusual circumstances as she tries to avoid her brother-in-law. They soon find themselves in the midst of a murder mystery in the carriage of a beautiful young Maharani on her way to her wedding. Once she reaches the kingdom of her new husband, the mystery deepens and seems to involve the stability of the whole country. Once back in Calcutta, Charlotte continues to avoid her past and Josh provides support and medical advice. Unfortunately, information Charlotte has for the Viceroy involves a major plot but arrives a little too late, putting her, Josh and many other people in extreme danger. Will Charlotte’s deductive reasoning and Josh’s level head help them out of a perilous situation?

AM Sardar has recreated a classic mystery character with a bold, modern twist in A Christmas in Calcutta. The main characters are deep, with decided issues and goals, and the action is engaging, keeping you turning the pages to find out how it all works out. With humor as well as sorrow, an interesting story unfolds highlighting Indian culture and scenery of the early 1900s while underscoring Charlotte’s mental capabilities, unusual for a typical Victorian lady. Great characters and action! Truly engaging and exciting. A Christmas in Calcutta is tremendously satisfying, bringing a new favorite character to the mystery genre with a historical twist.
