A serial killer is taking out the residents in a small Oklahoma town in the thrilling murder mystery Bad Luck and Whiskey by Molly Vandever. DC is the owner of a small newspaper in the little town of Indigo Falls. Her dream of being a novelist is stalemated by a massive writer's block. However, an anonymous poetry writer has decided to give her a boost. DC begins receiving uncanny notes followed by strange phone calls. The unknown caller tells DC that they are going to help her write a book. DC blows it off as a joke, but that night a local woman dies. The sheriff is undecided if the death was self-inflicted or whether foul play was involved.

The next night DC receives another note, which again is followed by a call from the strange poet. The next morning, another body is discovered in the river. Numerous coincidences make DC reconsider the bad joke ideas and she takes her suspicions to the sheriff. The body count rises, and the sheriff can't pin down a suspect.
