Behind Her Lives by Briana Cole sees Deven Reynolds reeling from shock when two police officers visit to notify her of her sister’s death. Deven is even more flabbergasted when she does not recognize the body. Together with Kennedy’s disreputable friend Beni, Deven searches the apartment for clues. She is further amazed when her good friend Paul identifies Kennedy from a selfie of the sisters as his ex-girlfriend “Amber”. The name Amber leads to a trail of identity theft, but Deven cannot accept that her sister would commit such a crime. Who exactly did everyone know as “Kennedy” and what happened to Deven’s real sister?

Behind Her Lives by Briana Cole was a heartrending mystery that kept me enthralled from page one until the end. I was intrigued because even though clues were unearthed, I still could not work out the riddle. I sympathized with Deven and wanted her to demonstrate that Kennedy was still alive, and prove she was not delusional with grief. The secret was more tragic than expected, leaving me genuinely sad. The plot explored a thought-provoking hypothesis that sometimes we don’t know even our nearest and dearest as well as we believe. I also enjoyed the side romance, which saw Deven evolve from being a convenience to a neglectful boyfriend to appreciating a genuinely kind man. The narrative combined suspense and new adult concerns with women’s literature to engross the mind and it held my attention completely. The book is impossible to put down, so I recommend you read it during a free afternoon.
