"Brimstone" by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child is the 5th book in the 'Pendergast series'. From the first time I met him in Relic I was hooked on Pendergast. In this installment Jeremy Grove is found murdered in his attic. His body is burned to crisp. The body burned from the inside out. A hoof print is burned into the floor and his crucifix has melted. In comes FBI Agent Pendergast to investigate the murder. Pendergast is not your typical FBI Agent. He specializes in the unusual cases. He is always a gentleman, and his methods are definitely unconventional. NYPD Sgt.Vincent D’Agosta and Laura Hayward both return to offer assistance to Pendergast. As the victims start piling up the clues point to Satan. Each victim seems to have made a pact with the devil himself.

Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child make quite a writing team. In this book we learn more about Pendergast himself. While this book stands well alone, I highly recommend reading them in order to further acquaint you with Pendergast. "Brimstone" is creepy, dark, at time humorous, paranormal, and always challenging. One of the things I like about the writing duo Preston and Child is their writing style. Their stories are well-planned and developed. Their sense of pacing is perfect. The ambiance is dark and rather frightening. Before reading this book I suggest you check to see if all the doors and windows are locked. Be prepared to jump at every sound and sleep with the light on. This review is of the audio version of "Brimstone", narrated by Scott Brick. Brick’s voice contributes to the ambiance of the story. The sound quality is superb. I can hardly wait for the next audio book featuring Pendergast.
