Equal parts hopeful and poignant, By Accident: A Memoir of Letting Go by Joanne Greene chronicles tragic and moving moments, providing powerful reflections on overcoming tragedy, loss, and pain. Life changes suddenly for Greene when she is hit by a car at a crosswalk. The accident sparks a journey of growth for Greene, who valued her independence and whose need for control had previously provided her with a false sense of safety. With vulnerability, she explores how the tragedies she has experienced in her life have impacted and changed her perspective. She examines her family relationships and explains how her childhood shaped her. After the accident, other hardships followed, which she covered in depth, drawing valuable insight from each experience.

Greene’s writing is exceptional, and the story’s descriptions are precise and compelling. I was drawn in by her honesty when exploring how the tragedies she has experienced helped her to pause and examine her life. Her story inspired me to examine my past and discover self-limiting beliefs and thought patterns that I could be holding on to. Her emotional reactions to the experiences she has had are skillfully covered. The story contains important lessons about letting go of the need for control and embracing help from friends and family. It encourages us to take a day at a time and appreciate each moment we have. By Accident by Joanne Greene is a thoughtful and candid memoir about how tragedy and trauma can provide opportunities for self-reflection and learning. It is an incredible work with helpful takeaway lessons for all readers.
