Inspired by the memoirs of one of her ancestors, Christopher Hawkins and His Daring Escapes is a Revolutionary War-era adventure novel by Jeanne Brownlee Becijos. Eager to serve his country as a patriot, twelve-year-old Christopher Hawkins runs away from home to join the crew of a privateer as a cabin boy, only to find himself and his fellow crewmates captured by the British. After serving under a British officer, Chris eventually finds his freedom and returns home to work on a farm. But when he learns of his best friend Josiah's death aboard a dreary prison ship, the Jersey, he sets off again to sail the seas and soon finds himself held prisoner on the Jersey. Now, he must find a way to escape before he shares Josiah's fate. Will Christopher be able to join his father and serve his country?

Christopher Hawkins and His Daring Escapes is a story of grit, determination, courage, and the indomitable will to survive. Jeanne Brownlee Becijos draws upon the experiences of her great-great-great-great grandfather to tell an absorbing tale about a young man's quest to fight for his country's freedom. Set in the latter half of the 18th century, Becijos's story brilliantly captures the prevailing mood of the ordinary folk of that era and crafts an immersive setting with realistic characters and a world that feels lived in. Aside from his time at the sea, I enjoyed young Christopher's encounters with the people who helped him out at his lowest points. Overall, I had a wonderful time reading the book and will gladly recommend it to young adult adventure lovers.
