Have you ever heard of light pollution? I’m sure you’ve heard of other forms of pollution, but light pollution is just as dire. There is too much light in our world; unnatural light is used to make the night brighter. Unfortunately, this unnatural light in the process blocks the beauty of the night sky, the stars, and the constellations. Light pollution makes it difficult even to see the Milky Way. Sagebrush is a tailless puppy who lives in the Rocky Mountains. After a long day helping the ranch’s cattle drive, Sagebrush falls asleep, waking up when all is dark. Even the barn light isn’t shining. It seems strange to Sagebrush, but what he learns about the night sky and light pollution changes this strange darkness into something extraordinary. He also knows, "If one is clever enough to create light, then one is clever enough to protect the darkness.” Read more in Corky Tails Tales of a Tailless Dog Named Sagebrush: Sagebrush and the Disappearing Dark Sky by Joni Franks.

Joni Franks' picture book Sagebrush and the Disappearing Dark Sky is another engaging and educational story in the Corky Tails series. Like the earlier books in the series, the plot follows Sagebrush as he learns another valuable life lesson about light pollution and preserving the beauty of the night sky. The story has an engaging, descriptive narrative. The characters are a combination of humans, animals, and little people. Each character is well-developed and adds an exciting dimension to the plot. The illustrations are spectacular, bold, colorful, and very intuitive. This is another excellent story to teach young audiences about protecting our environment and preserving the natural beauty of our world and the skies above us.
