Dead Girl is a young adult paranormal romance by Kerrie Faye. Ember Eve O'Neill is a sophomore at Wilson County High School. Due to sensory overload, Ember avoids people completely as she can hear their thoughts and see their auras - all of which she finds overwhelming. During the 1990-1991 school year, the actions of school bullies resulted in the loss of Ember's life, but when Ember finds a way to beat death, new problems arise. Terrifying new evils emerge, forcing Ember to take a life after she watches her father die. Ember's only friends, Hallee and Erick, help her keep her sanity as she is confronted with a recurring dream, and with a new student, Logan, giving Ember a chance at experiencing teenage romance, Ember's popularity suddenly soars. But all is not as it seems and when her best friends suddenly go missing, Ember must face the reality of her existence, what she truly is, and where her allegiance lies - with God or Lucifer.

Not only did I love the paranormal aspect of Dead Girl, but Kerrie Faye's unique imagination produced the most incredible tale of what happens after we die. With the lead character being a complete social pariah at the school, it is easy to cheer for her, being the underdog, and hope for things to get better for her. Many different types of characters presented themselves in Dead Girl, most of which were school bullies who thrived on Ember's sheer misery. I think the most impressive part of this story is seeing the phoenix rise from the ashes when Ember is at her most defeated. What does one do when learning that every single part of their existence as they know it is nothing but a lie? Ember makes one of the most difficult choices of her life, and I feel that anyone who is lucky enough to read Dead Girl will embrace the happiness that comes with it. I recommend Kerrie Faye's wonderful book to fans of paranormal tales and hope that there is a sequel in the works. What a fantastic read!
