Solid principles for good leadership, insightful tips and thoughts, helpful guidelines, and much more are found inside Thom Hayes’s Don’t Lead by Example. There are so many books on leadership in the market, so why read this one? When I read it, what struck me the most was that it felt like I had my very own coach who had come alongside me and given me his wealth of knowledge to be a better leader, mentor, and person. It wasn’t about what a great leader/mentor Thom had become but about imparting doctrines and knowledge so that I and other readers could benefit from his thirty-five years of civilian and military leadership experience. I took note of chapter eight, "ILM" (you’ll have to read it to discover what that stands for!).

Underscoring everything Thom Hayes writes is the attitude of a positive mindset. With that in mind, I don’t think it is just potential bosses and leaders who would benefit from his acquired wisdom—everybody can. He models a favorable/affirming outlook that he applies to his work ethic. In the book's first part, he gives examples from his workplaces and shows how each point worked in his life. His initial quote sums everything up: I lead intentionally and model by example. He goes on to explain why and how in a no-fuss, straightforward manner that was easy to digest and quick to spark enthusiasm for all he had to teach. I highly recommend this book, especially to people purposely setting their goals on becoming bosses and leaders in any walk of life.
