Alan Cohen employs methods for determining a good leader in his book, Easy in Harness: A Productive Approach to Hiring a Good Manager. He touches on changes in a company that will lead people to either stay, retire, or move to a different company, and provides real-world examples. Cohen discusses the ways companies can grow and change by starting with the type of leadership they employ. The author proposes entrepreneurial leaders as a strategy to improve production, learning, and communication. He compares types of leadership, providing the definitions and examples of entrepreneurial leaders and autocrats and the effects the individual has on the workers and company.

Alan Cohen effectively covers the personality, work ethic, and resources it takes to be a “five-star leader” in an environment infused with potential workplace stress and a job force with older workers. Cohen’s book changes the mindset and requirements for hiring a new manager, increasing the competency of the individual and the team’s motivation. With long-range examples of statistics and references, the book will certainly pique your interest in the subject, as Cohen uses examples from history and his lifetime to encourage and inspire future leaders. Cohen approaches the topic of great leadership after years of experience in medicine, management, and medical school administration, so his observations and suggestions should be evaluated and appreciated. Readers who are ready to become better leaders or are looking for a position within an intellectually stimulating company that cares about its employees will want to read Easy in Harness to help them better determine the right approach or company atmosphere for them.
