Finley Greene had worked hard for this day. In Even Better Than the Real Thing: A Romantic Comedy by Melanie Summers, Finley has an interview with Dr. Daniella Beauchamp, who is the most sought-after advisor at England’s Carlyle Institute of Art. It’s a guarantee that Finley will get any job she wants if Finley has her as an advisor. Beauchamp will only accept Finley if she gets access to Pemberton Hall, noting that Hayden Stuart is the next Earl of Pemberton Hall and also Finley’s employer. Hayden learns that to secure his earldom, he has to be married or his half-brother Tristan will inherit the estate. Hayden cannot find anyone to be his bride until Finley appears in his office. They enter into a fake marriage business contract to secure both of their futures. However, someone may not keep their end of the bargain.

Melanie Summers crafts a romance starring the black sheep of two families. Finley's family of Georgia peanut farmers cannot fund her desire to pursue her dreams in England. Hayden’s father was a serial cheater who had scant involvement in his son’s upbringing, which resulted in Hayden’s cynical view of love. Finley sees Hayden fast-tracking her to experience her dream, while Hayden views Finley as a valuable employee. The story's pacing and transitions were smooth and I couldn’t pry my eyes from the pages. The engaging conversations brought wit into play, especially with Finley’s sassy southern manners. Nothing in the story is predictable, including the ending, and I am looking forward to reading the sequel. Readers who enjoy amusing characters, unpredictable twists, and suspenseful romances will be happy with my recommendation for Even Better Than the Real Thing.
