Most altruistic jobs require saving people's lives as their primary objective. But do we pause to consider what happens to these people once they fail to meet this objective? Flash Point: A Firefighter's Journey Through PTSD by Christy Warren is a memoir and self-help book that takes us through her work experiences. As a paramedic and firefighter, Christy constantly had calls about fire and road accidents that required her attention. Each time she fulfilled her duty, she would put these experiences into her subconscious and forget them until an incident brought all her experiences flooding into her consciousness and made them repeatedly replay in her mind. It gave her insomnia, anxiety, anger management issues, and an emotional breakdown. Unable to understand what was happening, she sought help and discovered she had PTSD. Broken, she started isolating herself, abused drugs and substances, and became suicidal. Luckily, she enrolled in a retreat that transformed her life for the better.

Flash Point: A Firefighter's Journey Through PTSD by Christy Warren aims to create awareness and enlighten people on what PTSD is, its symptoms and signs, challenges, and ways to overcome it. Christy is a survivor that overcame PTSD. This gives courage to individuals suffering from it. It assures them that they are not alone and that they can overcome it through fighting and asking for assistance. Christy also demystifies some of the assumptions about PTSD and tells us that PTSD is a sickness like any other and that people should seek medication and adhere to it. In Christy's reflections, we understand what people going through PTSD endure, their thoughts, and how these thoughts affect their actions. Therefore, enrolling them in support groups and being involved in caring for and loving them is the best way to help them heal. I recommend this book to readers who are suffering from PTSD or those who have either friends or family members suffering from it.
