Foreign & Domestic Affairs is a work of fiction in the fantasy, interpersonal drama, and political drama sub-genres, and was penned by author S. Faxon. Written for adult reading audiences, the work does contain adult content, language usage, and fantasy violence pertinent to the subject matter. Written as a sequel to the opening novel, The Animal Court, we find ourselves in the midst of Vitenka’s newest struggle, set twenty years after the failed revolution. Heavy are the heads that wear the crowns, and the grieving monarchs must try to put aside the grief of their son’s death to retain their crowns and prevent chaos from overtaking their land.
Author S. Faxon has crafted a finely plotted and uniquely conceived novel of political intrigue, deeply emotive characters, and high stakes action as the fate of a kingdom hangs in the balance. Fans of The Animal Court will enjoy returning to Breyton and Gertrude’s story, which now lifts us from a daring romance into a complex and heartfelt bond, and one which is truly tested by the events of the plot. One of the features which I especially admired about this world was the strength of the extended worldbuilding, taking us beyond what we already knew, but keeping the ideas credible and realistic. This makes you feel like you’re reading about a world you could also live in, and helps you relate to the characters and the situations all the better. Overall, I would highly recommend Foreign & Domestic Affairs as an excellent follow-up novel in the series.
