Jake Doyle, a once-famous columnist syndicated in 200 newspapers, was busted for an illicit affair that produced a biracial son. Jake’s life is further complicated as his son, training for a Golden Gloves boxing tournament, falls foul of a notorious and deadly dangerous gang member. Jake’s daughter is pregnant and wants an abortion; his ex-wife and mother vehemently oppose that option, and his wealthy boss wants him to quit his meager job to help him win a presidential election. Freedom’s Just Another Word by Len Joy is a character-driven novel that captures and works through several current American event issues.

It's been a long time since I’ve read a novel in one sitting, but Freedom’s Just Another Word would not let me go; it is simply a fascinating “page-turner” in the purest definition of the term. I'm usually not a big fan of first-person narrative, but author Len Joy uses the lead character Jake to tell a fascinating story that hits all the current societal hot spots in the United States today. Everything from gun control to racism to women’s rights, the fickle justice system, and political intrigue is covered through Jake’s eyes and experiences as he tries to juggle all the balls without dropping any. Even with a small cliffhanger at the conclusion, Freedom’s Just Another Word fulfilled and exceeded all my expectations in rating it as the best book I’ve read this year. All the characters are true to life, and the situations that form the storylines are familiar and current news. I hope the small cliffhanger is the conclusion that ultimately leads to a follow-on story.
