Great Explorers: Observing Nature Through Sights and Sounds is Book #1 in the Emmi's World series by Kara A. Mullane with illustrations by Brie Bagwell. This colorful picture book introduces science, nature, and scientific methods in an age-appropriate manner. Emmi is a little girl who enjoys exploring her backyard with binoculars and recording what she finds in an observation logbook. She observes a robin eating a worm, a ladybug crawling on a daisy, and a boy on a swing. Other people join Emmi in observing things around them including a bluebird in a tree, a cat on a wall, and the sound of a hawk circling in the sky. Instructions for making play binoculars and a link to downloadable coloring and logbook pages are included.

In Great Explorers: Observing Nature Through Sights and Sounds, Kara A. Mullane and Brie Bagwell give us an entertaining and educational book about science that is targeted at children ages three to six. It introduces the skill of observation, a basic step in the scientific method, as a game of exploration. Emmi is a curious child who enjoys seeing and listening to what is around her. She shares her observations with other children and adults and learns the concept of perspective. One of the adults is blind but shares what he hears, demonstrating that everyone can be an explorer. The illustrations are sure to engage young children and provide many opportunities for adults to discuss with them how we can observe sights and sounds in nature.
