Heart Work is a collection of poetry by Kevin Wright, with accompanying artwork by Cristina Meraz Garcia. The poems aim to promote healing by addressing past trauma. They take readers back to the time of the slave trade and current injustices faced by people of color, such as police brutality, racism, and lack of recognition of their struggles. The poems encourage readers not to forget their origin story, and to continue their legacy. The collection also covers topics such as unappreciation, letting go of things and people that do not add value to one's life, and choosing to do better every day by being a source of positivity. The author also talks about his mother, love, life, death, being human, and rediscovering oneself.

Heart Work is a profound poetry collection that addresses hard truths about life. The poems are relatable and provide comfort to those on a journey of healing. Poems about loneliness, feeling undervalued, and loving someone who does not love you back will resonate with many readers. The poems about black people will also prompt readers to reflect on the trauma that people of color face daily. Kevin Wright has a great ability to vividly evoke imagery and emotion through his poetry, expressing thoughts and feelings beautifully and creatively. My favorite piece was about the teacher and artist, where the author beautifully compares the work of a painter to an educator, both creating masterpieces in their own way. The highlight is the stunning illustrations that complement the poems and provide a visual narrative. This is a must-read for anyone who enjoys reading healing poetry and admires beautiful art. Great work!
