Hollywood Failure by Will Phillips is the story of Tom Weaver who has great dreams and expectations when he lands a job with Adult Cartoon, his one-time favourite show of all time. He anticipates success and waits to be discovered. His job as Production Assistant, however, is not what he expected and he shuffles between making endless and pointless telephone lists and getting lunch for the whole cast and crew. Reality soon begins to dawn as Tom realises his dream job is just that – a dream – and probably doesn’t exist. Believing himself to be an emerging great comedy writer, the disillusionment and disappointment begin to have a massive effect on not just his work ethos, but on his whole outlook on life and relationships and financial stability.

Despite the somewhat bleak synopsis, this is actually quite funny. There are crisp one-liners, a great pace, and amusing situations. The author, Will Phillips, has skilfully turned a scenario of life and work spiraling out of control into a comedy of errors that would challenge many a professional comedy writer to equal. Situations that might destroy some people are described in a comedic way so that the reader is at a loss whether to laugh or cry. The author’s sense of humour is apparent from the outset and continues through the roller coaster story of shattered dreams and hopelessness. Throughout it all – and despite it – the writer shows the fickleness and egotism in the world of Hollywood and provides some serious food for thought for aspiring writers.
