This book is not for the casually curious! Home is Where Heart Is: Tiny Houses, Vans, and Living Your Best Life by Kristine Hudson is an extremely detailed introduction to life on the road, either part-time or full-time. It’s not a how-to book necessarily. It doesn’t teach you how to fix things, but it does suggest that if you are not at all handy, try before you buy. It is extremely helpful to be something of a do-it-yourselfer.
Kristine Hudson's Home is Where Heart Is is well-organized and well-written. Chances are that every possible question you have is covered, and many issues that you never thought of. Will you be traveling alone? With a pet? Will the whole family be traveling together? Will a small space suit you, or are you someone who wants more creature comforts? Can you live without water or power? Do you need a shower and a flush toilet, or will the woods be just fine for you? Where does the used water go, or the trash?
Dozens of scenarios are presented to the reader, including considerations before making a purchase or making the move. The array of possible vehicles is also discussed in depth. Finances are a huge factor. What size unit can you afford, including the vehicle insurance? The larger and heavier the vehicle, the worse the gas mileage will be. Planning on roughing it? Best to bring tools and basic parts in case something happens and you’re not near civilization. How much food? How much storage will there be for food? There is so much information contained on every page of this introductory training manual that it’s difficult to do this book justice. The photographs are nice breaks between sections.
