How High How Far by Michael Verrett is a children’s poetry book about how high and how far things will go to meet their goals, whether it be a cat chasing a mouse or a giant pig pile, an animal hopping contest or a fish wanting to fly. How High How Far combines the author's ability to rhyme with colorful illustrations to craft a vivid world for children. Each poem is slightly different in subject and font size though they all center around the theme of how high or how far you can go. In the back of the book is an 'about the author' page as well as a list of Verrett’s other works.
Michael Verrett’s How High How Far is a gorgeously illustrated book which is guaranteed to entrance kids and adults alike with its dreamlike vibrancy and endearing characters. Each page is filled with the author's slightly subdued colors that only make the bright ones stand out that much more. The book is broken up into sections with different styles and rhythms to set each of them apart. The best of the sections are written masterfully with strong and consistent tempos while others display more inconsistency and can throw the reader off the meter. Overall, this is a wonderful book that can be enjoyed by all ages. The art alone is enough to make it a success but the best points in the writing show exactly how high and how far the ceiling is for this book.
