Author Biography

My name is Sherri Eri. I love picture books, even though it has been ages since I was of picture book age. I’m visually-impaired (VI). And in the process of writing my first book, I realised I didn’t want VI kids to ever be left out when it came to understanding a picture book.

Hoot is a cute brown owl who wishes to be more than an owl. One bright morning, Hoot sets off on a daunting mission to be “a brand new someone else.” He tries to be a cockerel but is unable to let out a proper coo. Then he paints himself purple and pink and tries to be a cow, but he cannot make a single moo. Eventually, he paints himself yellow to look like a duck, but once again, his voice betrays him. The animals he has tried to imitate are furious. But alas, all Hoot could do was hoot, or so he thought, until his sharp ears picked up a dreaded sound and all his amazing owl instincts burst out. I Am Not an Owl Or Am I? by Sherri Eri is a refreshing story about authenticity.

I Am Not an Owl Or Am I? is a beautiful blend of action, colors, and morals. Hoot’s frantic efforts to be someone else resulted in a humorous and dramatic plot, and this was visualized with lovely and expressive animation by Nuratiqah Sabrin. This book’s diction is equally animated, with onomatopoeia and interesting words that will challenge young readers. Another good feature of this little book is its unique characters—imagine a purple and pink cow! I learned a couple of lessons from Hoot’s experience, one of which is self-acceptance. Sherri Eri created a unique and lovely children’s story. I liked everything about this book, and I recommend it for younger children.
