Katelyn's Crow by Mary Beth Laufer is a fantastic children's book. When Katelyn finds a baby bird in the high weeds under an oak tree, she takes him home, unaware of its species. Her mother tells her that a baby bird belongs in nature, but she lets Katelyn keep him for a while. Now that Katelyn's eleven, she can have a pet, but she has to prove she is responsible, so her main mission is to keep the baby bird alive at all costs. She doesn't know if it’s a boy or girl or what to feed it. Katelyn names it Taco and soon learns how hard it is to care for a wild bird. Taco might not survive, but Katelyn is determined to keep him alive, even if it means getting into trouble. Will Katelyn keep Taco in a cage or release him back into nature?

Katelyn's Crow is a clever story about crows, insects, mistreating animals, nature, friendship, books vs. the internet, and city vs. country lifestyle. Mary Beth Laufer's book is charming and surprising. It showcases what it means to take care of a wild bird, why keeping a crow as a pet is illegal, and why it's not okay to kill and collect insects. It’s sure to win the hearts of children and pet lovers of all ages, as it contains amazing bird and insect illustrations and helpful information about crows and insects. Readers will learn empathy and respect for all of nature’s creatures, especially the tiny ones.
