Legacy of Lies by Doris Lemcke is a sweeping story that has it all: love, lust, obsession, crime, mob connections and more. Spanning decades, this book follows Iris "Ike" Edwards in her quest to uncover her grandfather Poppy's life story and family secrets, despite many warnings to cease and desist. Iris gets the help of a childhood friend now turned gorgeous doctor, Joe, as they uncover the unknown backstory of her family, one frustrating clue at a time.

If I were to try to put this book into a 'category,' I don't think I would be able to do so. This book has elements that will speak to every possible reader. There is murder, there is mystery, there is crime and yes, there is romance. It is a phenomenal blend of all potential genres of storytelling that one might be concerned wouldn't quite mesh. However, it blends together seamlessly, all with Native American traditions woven in like golden threads in a tapestry.

Doris Lemcke has done a wonderful job in bringing her characters to life on her pages. She has mastered the art of describing them so that you can picture what is going on, without too much excess detail. You will feel excited alongside Iris as she uncovers a new clue; you will feel her despair when her theories don't quite pan out. Legacy of Lies is a strong book that builds at a perfect speed before ending in a victorious crescendo. I highly recommend this book to all lovers of literature.

Legacy of Lies: Love, Lies and Family Secrets is a romance novel by Doris Lemcke. Iris Edwards is originally from Detroit. She is a journalist with a weakness for three things: “a riddle, a mystery, and a dare.” She has been living and working in Philadelphia for three years. When she receives a mystery letter from her grandfather, Iris finds herself tempted. After all, her grandfather has pretty much just given her the chance to tell one heck of a story – his biography. Her reunion with her grandfather is cut short, considering that he dies shortly thereafter. After the reading of her grandfather’s will, Iris receives the deeds to an entire town. With the aid of an attractive doctor, Iris makes use of her investigative journalism skills to discover more truths than just one.

The prose is breathtaking. The book includes some beautifully written love scenes, devoid of strong language. Joe, with his “surgeon’s hands” and all, likes to tell Iris that whenever she uses a colorful word or two, he will tell her nuns, so yeah, the book had quite a few laughs. Other times, I was terror-stricken whenever a mobster named Matt and Iris were close enough to inhale each other’s carbon dioxide. Matt truly seemed to hate Iris, her intelligence seeming to be one of the things about her that pissed him off so much. Lemcke’s character portrayals, descriptive paragraphs, are all top notch. I began reading this book not knowing what to expect, and before I knew it, I was totally immersed. Readers will be floored over and over again by each revelation.

In a great new work by author Doris Lemcke, Legacy of Lies: Love, Lies and Family Secrets, readers will be treated to quite a roller coaster of a read! Follow the story of Detroit investigative journalist, Iris Edwards. She's been challenged by her wealthy and infamous grandfather to write his biography, and to find his "Unforgivable Sin." She certainly got much more than she bargained for, as she finds herself unraveling tales dating back to the days of copper mines, gangsters, and rum-runners to help her find the deadly secret that could rewrite history. Her grandfather's Native American doctor, Joe Falcon, has his own reasons for finding the truth of the secret, and needs Iris' help to solve the 30-year-old mystery of his mother's murder. Will the duo be able to find what they are looking for? You'll need to read the book to find out!

I very much enjoyed Legacy of Lies: Love, Lies and Family Secrets. Author Doris Lemcke has done a wonderful job in creating characters that her readers will relate to, connect with, and continue to think about long after the story is done. If that isn't a hallmark of a great author, I'm not sure what is. Her story line is unique and full of twists and turns that are quite interesting and unexpected, not something that I, as a prolific reader, frequently come across anymore. I highly recommend this book, and look forward to reading more from author Doris Lemcke as soon as I possibly can!

There’s SO MUCH to love about this book! History and Ojibwa native American folklore. Mystery and action. Great protagonists. Flashbacks interwoven at the perfect times. Plenty of lies and secrets. And my very favorite element, the interplay between the Ojibwa legends, Poppy’s fairy tales, and reality. It’s creative, and quite unique as far as I know. The author has written herself one hell of a legacy.
