Maggie's Lost Song by Danielle La Rosa is the story of a little girl who adores music and is part of a loving family that chimes in chorus. Their neighbors' response reflects the value of sharing exuberance with others. Amidst this creative scenario, Maggie becomes upset. On the cusp of the first day of school, she is apprehensive about being judged by others and is concerned about facing a host of unknowns. The what-ifs become overwhelming. The support and comfort offered by her mother allow Maggie to appreciate the true meaning of her love for music. With this new understanding, when Maggie arrives at school, her perspective has changed.

The tale offers several important insights. Danielle La Rosa underscores what music represents in a way that will resonate with young readers. The fact that Maggie's home overflowed with joyful songs illustrates what brings people together and that what we most care about is an aspect of self-definition. Dwelling on the possibilities of all that might occur, Maggie's apprehension largely revolved around her fears about being different. Her mother's response lets Maggie know what her singular song represents. Maggie's Lost Song is a delightful book that should be shared with young children, especially if followed by talking about why their differences are unique and special. Maggie's story is about taking a giant step forward in the face of change. Understanding and appreciating that there is only one of you is the wonderfully conveyed lesson—something every child needs to feel about themselves.
