Learning about horses and new places is fun and stimulates the imagination. In Max Horses Around, Debbie Nellis shares a charming story about friendship, animal care, and outdoor fun. Max the turtle starts his day by hearing the horses passing by his home. He decides to visit two horses, Cindy and Jack who are his best friends, at the stables. Together, they ride around Mackinac Island. Due to strict transportation regulations in this area, not all vehicles are allowed, making horses indispensable. Throughout the story, we discover the roles of these animals, from serving as cabs or pulling carts for recreational rides. We also learn interesting concepts about the island, such as the Friendship Altar, a popular rock formation in the area.

Max Horses Around has a unique illustration style. I loved the way it combines the simplicity of Max's design with the more detailed depictions, such as those of the horses and some of the scenery. Some images include abstract elements, adding visual depth to the story. Both the stables and the places on the island have a unique appeal. In addition, Debbie Nellis uses clear and simple language when sharing interesting facts. She uses short sentences, which are ideal for children who are just beginning to read. She gives a complete picture of Mackinac Island and its close relationship with horses through the descriptions, adding enriching context to the plot. The story is simple but charming, highlighting the beauty of a day's ride. Max Horses Around is a good choice for teaching children about the harmonious coexistence between people and animals.
