Melusine: Birds of Many Feathers by Geraldine V. Oades-Sese Ph.D. introduces Melusine, who hears a strange bird call that sends her on a quest to find the bird responsible. Along the way, she hears other sounds, thinking that it might be her mystery bird, only to find that it is a different type altogether. As she continues along, she discovers birds that she knows, and some that she doesn’t. Not only did each bird make a different sound, but they also came in all different shapes, sizes, and colors. This only makes her even more curious about the bird she’s searching for. With all of the different sounds she hears, how will Melusine ever find her mysterious bird?

This picture book will take children on an adventure to explore the characteristics that set the different species of birds apart. Melusine is spirited, curious, and energetic, which makes it easy for children to relate to her and her enthusiasm. The illustrations are as amusing and entertaining as the story, and they give readers a great visual of what each bird looks like. I loved the parallel Melusine drew about the diversity of people as she encounters a variety of new birds. I recommend Melusine: Birds of Many Feathers to small children who appreciate picture books and enjoy learning new things as they read. This book will encourage children to see the beauty in everything and everyone around them regardless of appearances and differences. I hope that Geraldine V. Oades-Sese writes more books like this one that will entertain and teach children valuable life lessons.
