Most Secret is a historical romance by Kathleen Buckley. While investigating a smuggler with the help of Alex Gordon, Roger Markham dies unexpectedly. Alex meets Roger’s niece and beneficiary, Jane Stowe, whose information confirms her wayward brother, Rupert, is involved in smuggling muskets to aid Bonnie Prince Charlie in Scotland. Ill-treated by her family, Jane now finds herself accused of murdering her uncle, which only makes her family life grimmer. Alex travels in disguise to Scotland to stop the smuggling while proving Jane’s innocence. Unfortunately, Rupert’s loyalty lies with his Jacobean friends, not Alex, so he deceives him. Plus, he and his family wouldn’t mind spending Jane’s inheritance.

Kathleen Buckley ensured her historical romance was not lacking any content that a good novel should have. Set in the Jacobite period, Most Secret is a beautifully written story with continuous adventure, action, mystery, humor, and great twists that molded it even better within its well-researched historical setting. Living conditions in London were extremely appalling during the 18th century and this novel clearly showed the social hierarchy and political unrest as it was in that period. History has always interested me. I became very fond of Alex, Jane, and certain household characters that were also noteworthy. Jane was clever and never lost her sense of worth or wit, despite her family’s behavior. Alex was also strong, resourceful and quick thinking in dangerous situations. The dialogue was interesting and often entertaining, as was the entire story. I liked the book cover and highly recommend Most Secret by Kathleen Buckley to readers.
