Mulch Toad Hits the Road by Mikaeli B. Coleman is a beautifully illustrated children's book. The titular mulch toad is comfortable with always staying at home. Actually, more than comfortable, he is very happy to stay at home and do nothing but eat and sleep. However, one day his peace is disturbed. It seems as if his mulch home has been scooped up by something and is being moved far away. Should he abandon his home? No. He plans to remain in his mulch. When it seems safe, the mulch toad comes out of the mulch to examine his new surroundings. The toad quickly realizes that his home relocation has played out very differently from his imagination. However, his adventure has only just begun.

I enjoyed reading Mikaeli B. Coleman's Mulch Toad Hits the Road. More importantly, I feel sure that the intended audience, children, will also enjoy Coleman's work. This is a well-written story with a plot that many young readers can relate to. The mulch toad embracing adventure is sure to motivate youngsters to go on adventures of their own. Another relevant theme that is focused on is friendship. The author reminds us that we can form unlikely friendships if we are open to understanding and helping others. The vibrant colorful illustrations do a lot of the storytelling. The formatting of the text on the pages also adds to the enjoyment children will have when reading this book. I highly recommend Mulch Toad Hits the Road to all readers.
