No Safe Haven by Angela Moody is a historical Christian novel set during the Civil War. Tillie belongs to a righteous, devoutly anti-slavery family. Living together are Tillie, her parents, her sister Maggie, and a young apprentice named Sam, while her brothers James and William fight in the war. The town witnesses chaos as disorganized Confederate forces wreak havoc, soon countered by Union cavalry and infantry, leading to a fierce clash at Gettysburg. Seeking safety, Tillie accompanies a neighbor and her daughters to Jacob Weikert's farm, but it is taken over by Union troops and transformed into a field hospital. Tillie rises to the occasion and is successful in a noble role she takes on, but she deeply struggles with questions on the role of her faith in the face of such bloodshed.

No Safe Haven by Angela Moody is a beautifully written and detailed Christian novel that takes readers to the front line of the Civil War through the eyes of a young girl who, by witnessing the brutality of war, is forced into emotional womanhood prematurely. Or, at least to me as a mother, Tillie is a teen child. Moody handles Tillie's gradual coming of age with the compassion of a skilled writer who can look back at what was and not simply chalk it up to 'well, that's just how it was done.' The details of the landscape and, my goodness, those depictions of war in the third-person are almost cinematic. The prose and Tillie's view of the world are great, and the Christian themes are obvious to a reader without being heavy-handed. Overall, this is an excellent novel. Very highly recommended.
