(NOT) Scary Stuff at the Doctor's Office: Planning A Tear-Free, Fear-Free Adventure Into Healthcare by Tana S Holmes is a 28-page-long children’s illustrated book that talks about going to the hospital or a doctor’s office. It includes a must-read preface for parents or guardians of kids that helps adults to focus on how they can help children through potentially scary experiences such as these. We humans fear what we don’t understand, and that’s not limited to being a child. When something is explained in ways we can accept, then the fear can be reduced and even eliminated. The preface teaches adults to validate a child’s fears and offers ways of dealing with them.

Each page of this book brings a colorful fun way of explaining what different technologies exist for recovery. The pages emphasize “not scary” and are fun to read together, parents and children. Topics such as scales, x-rays, shots, blood-pressure cuff, ear light, pulse oximeter, nebulizer, reflex hammer, stitches, and casts are presented in bright, detailed, and fun ways. The positive spin on each page makes the book an interesting read. I like the way the author introduces the superpower detector (pulse oximeter) to bring an entertaining element into the mix and set the stage for other and creative ways of thinking parents can introduce. (NOT) Scary Stuff at the Doctor's Office by Tana S Holmes is sure to be a favorite tool for both parents and children alike. Highly recommended.
