Slavia is not immune to the wave of changes across the Eastern Bloc countries brought about by Perestroika. Even the police, who had been trained to suppress demonstrations against the regime, looked on, as this was what the people wanted. Ionescu had been the president of Slavia as things went from bad to worse, with people facing food rations, corruption, torture, and forced labor in re-education camps. Most of the other leaders are also incompetent with numerous vices; for instance, the people's commissar in charge of culture and propaganda is a child molester. But there is one leader whom even the head of national security cannot find anything against: Helena. As the head of education, she believes in doing good for the people and was the first to join the protesters. To find out how things unfold, get a copy of Perestroika: An Eye for an Eye, a Tooth for a Tooth by Joao Cerqueira.

Perestroika by Joao Cerqueira is wonderfully written, with a nicely woven plotline and twists and turns that will keep you looking forward to the subsequent chapters. The novel is very effective in passing on the intended message, and I enjoyed how it showed both the good and bad sides of events as they unfolded. I loved in particular the characters of Helena and Olin, who, despite being surrounded by evil, try to do the right thing. Other characters are also well-developed and relatable. The author describes things vividly, which captures the imagination of the reader, and the prowess in narration adds to the overall appeal of the book. I am looking forward to reading something else by this author.
