Piper is excited about her birthday party. She has invited some friends from school as well as her very best friend, Mei. All the girls give Piper art supplies for her birthday, except Mei, who gives her gardening tools, soil, and plants for the garden she knows Piper always wanted to start in her backyard. In Linden Grim’s Piper’s Garden Adventure, Piper learns that starting a garden on your own is a huge task. Is she up to doing it on her own? She’s one very determined young lady and she turns down the offers of assistance from her parents and from Mei. But, in hindsight, perhaps she should have accepted their help. The soil in the backyard is too hard; she can’t dig deep enough for her new plants; everything’s wilting from the transplant; and it’s taking much longer than she ever thought it would.

Linden Grim’s picture book, Piper’s Garden Adventure, is all about responsibility, overcoming pride, and learning how to accept help from others. The language is simple so young readers can easily follow along. The illustrations are a bonus as they add another dimension to the story and readers can see how determined and then how frustrated Piper is when struggling to start her garden. Through her gardening adventure, Piper must learn that sometimes it’s just not a good idea to be so stubborn. At the end of the book, the author provides some questions to open up a discussion of some of the key points in the story. A great interactive book to spark a conversation.
