Poison in the Pond by DL Richardson is the first Shivers novella. Karen Malcolm has escaped from a hostage situation. Cain held her prisoner in her own home for a week and when he gets life in prison, she can finally move on with her life. Marrying Dr. Carlisle and becoming mom to his daughter, she tries to settle into her new life but the nightmare is never over. Cain wants her to forgive him and contacts her from prison. Moving to a new home with a duck pond, things take a dark turn and Karen is pulled into a new nightmare where there are things that even Cain is scared of. Can Karen ever settle down to a normal life or is she destined to suffer forever?

Poison in the Pond by DL Richardson is a great short story, perfect for filling in a couple of spare hours. Right from page one, I was pulled into the story and it just got better and better as it moved along. This is an all-action story, very deep and dark with a few excellent twists in it. This is horror, romance and the paranormal all rolled into one and the pace never lets up all the way through. The ending is great and it’s one of those stories that will stay with you for a long time. The characters are excellent, all developed perfectly, even the imaginary friend, and I found myself rooting for them all the way through. To start with, the title confused me but it did become clear, very cleverly, just what the poison in the pond is. Great story, and I would love to read more from this author.
