"Pop. 1280" by Jim Thompson.

Recently I have reviewed several of Jim Thompson’s audio books. His books are all intense, more than a bit off the wall and distinctive. Another thing that stands out in Thompson’s book is that the characters are all a mix of good and evil; he shows how people are multidimensional. No one is totally good. When faced with certain situations all will compromise their morals. Believe Thompson to be a very cynical person.

"Pop. 1280" is the story of a small town sheriff, Nick Corey. Corey’s goal in life is to get paid to do nothing. He enjoys eating, sleeping and well, that is about it. The town’s people seem to think Nick is the town idiot. Letting them believe this serves his purpose. Actually he is a brilliant manipulator. He allows people to “hang themselves.” For a long time Nick has allowed his wife, brother-in-law, the town people and the sheriffs in other counties intimidate him. Nick took it and slowly the anger began to build until like a pressure cooker he exploded. Perhaps exploded isn’t the right word, for what he did was plot and manipulate people into getting his revenge for him.

There is an amazing amount of humor in this dark read. The scene where Nick is telling another sheriff about two pimps is hilarious. Nick allows the sheriff to belittle and abuse him. However, in the end Nick had the last word. This is my favorite Jim Thompson story. Thompson’s genius shines through in "Pop. 1280".
